There are two kinds of people: those who have seen Angélique Kidjo perform live and those who should – and those in the first category really also fall into the latter. The charisma of the Beninese singer-songwriter never wears off.
Kidjo has been described as a legend, icon, diva and queen. These accolades suggest past greatness, but she’s an artist in her finest form. Kidjo released her acclaimed album Mother Nature last year, which combines hip-hop with Afrobeat and Benin’s traditional Zilin and calls for resistance through the message of love. The album brought together artists from across the African continent and drew its themes from around the world.
“Her success is not a pyramid but a constantly growing circle,” said the online music publication Pitchfork of Kidjo. Huvila offers the audience an opportunity to join that joyful musical circle for one night.
Also joining the circle will be Tampo, who will open the evening. Kusti Vuorinen will lead on as the band journeys from country cumbia in one moment to Caribbean lounge in the next.
