Event Introduction
Anoushka Shankar is one of the world’s most renowned sitarists, an artist, composer, activist, and influential figure. Having released thirteen solo albums, she has received numerous accolades: she has been nominated for a Grammy Award an impressive eleven times—making her the first Indian woman to achieve this—and has been awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Oxford University. She is also an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music and one of the first female composers whose works have been included in the UK A-level music syllabus.
Born into a family of musicians, Shankar began playing the sitar at the age of nine under the guidance of her father, the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar. She not only mastered the traditions of Indian classical music but also embraced the improvisational freedom for which her father was famous. This boundary-crossing approach has led her to collaborate with artists from various genres, including Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Sting, Jacob Collier, Joshua Bell, Arooj Aftab, Nils Frahm, M.I.A, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and her half-sister Norah Jones.
Shankar’s performances have taken her from legendary jazz clubs to grand concert halls and festival main stages, captivating audiences of up to 40,000 people. Her music seamlessly blends the traditions of Indian classical music with contemporary styles such as jazz, electronic music, and film scores.
In 2025, Anoushka Shankar will celebrate 30 years of performing with the release of a new album and her role as the artistic director of the Brighton Festival. She is a unique artist who fearlessly combines tradition with experimentation, continuously pushing the boundaries of musical expression.
Composer and saxophonist Timo Lassy is one of Finland’s most renowned jazz musicians. With a strong international career, he has played a key role in elevating Finnish jazz onto the global stage, particularly in the European jazz scene. Lassy’s music appeals to a wide audience, and his releases and performances have gained recognition far beyond the jazz community.
Lassy began his career with U-Street All Stars but rose to fame as a member of The Five Corners Quintet, a group instrumental in the resurgence of Finnish jazz in the early 2000s. His solo career took off after 2007, leading to multiple acclaimed album releases that have received praise both in Finland and internationally. Lassy has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Yrjö Award and the Emma Award, and his music has been widely celebrated in international media.
Lassy’s latest project, Timo Lassy Trio, released its self-titled debut album in August 2021. Featuring bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, the album received a five-star review in Helsingin Sanomat and has garnered significant international attention.
Deeply rooted in the soul jazz tradition of the 1960s, Lassy continues to evolve as an artist. His trio album showcases a rich soundscape, incorporating lush string arrangements and electronic elements, reflecting his constant drive for artistic innovation.
