Gisèle Vienne: Crowd
A group of young people gather to dance, alone and together at the same time. A pulsating techno beat fills the air, sweat soaks their clothes and mud stains their trainers.
The works of the Franco-Austrian Gisèle Vienne explore humanity with its often dark and secretly violent sides. Crowd, which premiered in 2017, brings 15 dancers onto a simplified stage for a night-time party, between dream and reality.
Exploring rave parties as a modern ritual, Crowd slides from the chaotic to the cathartic and from the harrowing to the hypnotic. The dancer’s slow, fragmented movements and brief encounters strip bare the entire emotional spectrum from euphoria to hatred. The playlist curated for the work by Peter Rehberg covers 30 years of electronic music history from Berlin to Detroit.
A philosophy graduate, Vienne (b. 1976) creates stage works that defy simple categorisations with her trusted collaborators including author-poet Dennis Cooper and musicians Peter Rehberg and Stephen O’Malley, whose duo KTL is also heard in Crowd.
