Vesala could easily just rest on her laurels and take solace in her old hits. However, Huvila Festival Tent will host an artist capable of change, continuing to explore new directions, most recently ambitious art pop with the single “Mul ei oo lapsuudensankarii”.
Vesala’s versatility is also demonstrated by her previous visits to the Helsinki Festival. She appeared at Huvila Festival Tent as part of PMMP in 2007 and as part of the Kerkko Koskinen Kollektiivi in 2012. Last year, Vesala performed at a concert organised in honour of Esa-Pekka Salonen at the Finnish National Opera.
One of the best Finnish storytellers, she released her first solo album in 2016.Huvila Festival Tent offers the audience the privilege of hearing new music before the artist is literally off to bigger arenas: in October, Vesala will perform at the Hartwall Arena for the first time as a solo artist.
The evening begins with a Nordic Music Prize nominee, the Helsinki-based trio Karina, whose debut album was given a five-star review in Helsingin Sanomat. The self-titled debut album’s indie pop effortlessly grows from shallow breaths into feverish narration. Karina appears at Huvila accompanied by a choir.
Doors open at 5.30 pm, Karina starts at 7 pm and Vesala at 8.30 pm.
Age limit: 18. Underage persons can attend the event if they are accompanied by their legal guardian.

The Huvila Festival Tent is the Helsinki Festival’s dedicated festival hub and a unique cross between a concert hall and a traditional festival marquee. Designed by architect Roy Mänttäri, the tent has been erected by the Tokoinlahti bay every year since 1995. The Huvila programme, encompassing everything from intimate concerts to riotous club nights, is a valuable addition to the city’s music scene. Huvila is particularly known for its strong world music offering and for providing an early platform to lesser-known artists. Past Huvila acts include Radiohead, Patti Smith, Cesaria Evora, Marc Ribot, Laurie Anderson & Lou Reed, Wilco, Hugh Masekela and Yoko Ono & Thurston Moore.
As the name suggests, Huvila is a tent and the weather can sometimes lend its own special charm to the proceedings. Sounds from outside the tent can sometimes be heard during performances. Don’t forget to bring a warm layer, as the nights in August can be chilly. Most concerts have free seating on a first-come, first-served basis.. The Huvila season coincides with the end of the summer season and to make the most of it, there is usually dancing on most nights!
The tent comprises an atmospheric restaurant, the perfect place for enjoying the August nights pre and post-concert. Catering is provided by Juuri Tapahtumat, owned by the culinary talents responsible for Helsinki’s highly-acclaimed Juuri restaurant.
Events at the Huvila Festival Tent are for adults aged 18 and over. Younger guests can be admitted provided they are accompanied by a guardian. The age restriction does not apply to daytime concerts and children’s events.
The performances start at 19–20 and finish no later than 22 on weekdays and 23 on weekends. Check the schedule on individual nights on the events pages.
