Acknowledged conductor James Kahane at the French Institute

Event Introduction

As part of the Night of the Arts in Helsinki, we invite you to meet the internationally renowned French conductor, James Kahane!

Does a conductor need to know how to play all the instruments? Why are musical notes alone not enough for an orchestra to play? What are the meanings behind the different gestures used by a conductor?

If you want answers to all these questions and many more, join us at the French Institute of Finland for the Night of the Arts, where we will host the French conductor James Kahane for an exclusive meeting! Mr. Kahane is the Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada, Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, and Principal Conductor of the Drôme Chamber Orchestra in France. During this event, he will explain the principles of his profession, helping you understand the meaning of the gestures that he uses and their impact on how the orchestra interprets a piece. At the end, Mr. Kahane will answer your questions about this fascinating but not so well-known subject.

The meeting will be organized in three different slots, each lasting one hour. The first starts at 1:30 PM, the second at 3:00 PM, and the last at 4:30 PM. The language of the event is English. The event is open to everyone and does not require any musical knowledge. Free entry. Please arrive on time for each session: the doors of the Institute will be closed during the sessions.

Dans le cadre de la Nuit des Arts, nous vous invitons à une rencontre avec le chef d’orchestre de renommée internationale, James Kahane !

Un chef d’orchestre doit-il savoir jouer de tous les instruments ? Pourquoi les notes de musique ne suffisent-elles pas pour qu’un orchestre puisse jouer ? Quelles sont les significations des différents gestes utilisés pour diriger un orchestre ?

Si vous voulez avoir la réponse à toutes ces questions et à bien d’autres, rendez-vous à l’Institut français de Finlande dans le cadre de la Nuit des Arts, où nous recevrons le chef d’orchestre français James Kahane pour une rencontre inédite !

M. Kahane est le directeur musical de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Hamilton au Canada, le chef d’orchestre principal de l’Orchestre de Chambre de Helsinki ainsi que le chef d’orchestre principal de l’Orchestre de Chambre de la Drôme en France. Pendant cet événement, il vous expliquera les principes de son métier, vous permettant de comprendre les conséquences des différents gestes qu’il fait ainsi que son influence sur la manière dont l’orchestre interprète une œuvre. À la fin, ce professionnel de la musique répondra à vos questions par rapport à ce thème passionnant mais pas forcément très connu.

La rencontre sera organisée en trois créneaux différents, chacun durant une heure. Le premier débute à 13h30, le second à 15h et le dernier à 16h30. La langue de l’événement est l’anglais. L’événement est ouvert à tous et ne nécessite pas de connaissances en musique. Entrée libre. Nous vous prions d’arriver à l’heure pour chaque séance : les portes de l’Institut seront fermées pendant les séances.
