Event Introduction

Lou gallery hosts the first solo exhibition by Helsinki-based artist kolya kotov, entitled “bruises of those who side hustle as muses”. The title refers to a poem written by the artist. The autobiographical works combine textiles, photography and kinetic sculptures.

The works in the exhibition are inextricably rooted in the artist’s own life, at the intersection of identity and lived experience. The artist’s own body is strongly present.

The self-portrait printed on textiles contains references to various forces that structure and shape ideas about gender, animality and the expectations attached to them. The limblike forms moving with programmed motors in the sculpture are unrecognisably manipulated images of the artist’s body parts. The works evoke the meanings we associate with different bodies, animals and technology.

kotov studied fashion design at the Moscow Institute of Art and Design and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts.
