Night of the Arts at the Art Room

Event Introduction

Join us for Art Night at the Art Room! Explore the premises or give drawing a try! Vappu Rossi, the Drawing Master at the University of Helsinki, presents to the audience about the venue, history, and course activities of the Art Room. You can draw the plaster collection sculptures all evening, if the space permits.

Event Details:
Open to everyone, free entry.
The event operates on a non-stop basis, and the Art Room can accommodate up to 60 people at a time.
If space permits, you can draw for the entire evening, until 7:30 p.m.

What to Bring:
Your own drawing equipment, such as notebooks or sketchbooks, and your favorite drawing materials (pencils, colored pencils, fiber-tipped pens, or chalks).
Equipment can also be borrowed from the Art Room.

The Art Room is Finland’s oldest institution of art education. Many masters of the Golden Age of Finnish Art have studied or taught here, and it has hosted significant exhibitions, including Finland’s first public art exhibition in 1845. Since 1956, the Art Room has been located on the 7th floor of the Porthania building, offering courses for both the public audience and University of Helsinki students.

The Art Room’s plaster cast collection includes about fifty plaster sculptures, from copies and partial copies of ancient, Renaissance, and medieval sculptures to anatomical models. The plaster sculptures can be drawn traditionally or experimentally, as short croquis-style exercises, or even without looking at the drawing. Drawing plaster casts has been part of academic art education for centuries, and plaster drawing remains an excellent way to practice simplifying a three-dimensional object onto a flat surface.

Welcome to draw! No previous experience with drawing or plaster sculptures is required.
