The German Embassy Helsinki warmly invites to the Night of the Arts on 15.8.2024 at the German Library in Helsinki!

The cultural program addresses two pillars of art: literature and theater, featuring an audience-oriented reading from the crime novel “Schuld schwarz-weiß”and a multifaceted lecture on the life works of the Austrian Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek.

17:00 Guilt and Stereotypes – the novel “Schuld schwarz-weiß”

Nina Laurinkari presents her debut novel, published in 2022 by the Belgian Grenzecho-Verlag (GEV): a European detective story set in Brussels, the Belgian Ardennes, the French Atlantic coast, and the Finnish forests. The novel is a medley of contemporary literature, crime fiction, and social criticism, diving deep into topics such as guilt, trust, life and love. The detective story itself combines a missing person investigation with an unresolved death case from various perspectives. Alongside the crime theme, the book deals with relatable small and big aspects of life: human fears and needs, prejudices and speculations – and the fact that nothing and no can be easily put into boxes. Nothing is either-or, purely black or white.

18:00 Elfriede Jelinek – Prodigy or Enfant Terrible?

About 20 years ago, Elfriede Jelinek won the Nobel Prize in Literature – a splendid reason to review the life and works of the Austrian writer. The theater producer Juliane Mikkonen will provide the audience with extensive and exciting insights into Elfriede Jelinek’s life and work in her lecture, featuring numerous visual and audio sources. Special focus is on Jelinek’s play ”Jackie – Death and the Maiden IV,” which will premiere in Helsinki in October 2024 (in Finnish) as a co-production between Myllyteatteri and Teatteri Avoimet Ovet. The play posthumously explores the psyche of America’s ”First Lady” icon, Jacqueline Kennedy (later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis), revealing the full spectrum of her life: glamour and glitz, addictions, physical decline, jealousy, lost husbands and children…

Who?

Nina Laurinkari (born Uckel, 1986) has been born and raised in Berlin. Nonetheless, Nina truly feels european: she spent a year each in France and Spain during her youth, studied in the Netherlands (European Law and International Law), and lived and worked in Brussels for 11 years. Since 2020, she lives in Helsinki with her Finnish husband and their two daughters. In 2023, Nina started a Master’s program at the University of Helsinki (Political and Communication Sciences). Moreover, she is busy writing her follow-up novel – another crime story from the heart of Europe.

Juliane Mikkonen (born Ritzka, 1985), who grew up in Göttingen and studied theater studies in Munich, has lived and worked in Finland for over 10 years. Currently, she works as a production manager for the Myllyteatteri as well as at the contemporary circus collective ”Sivuhenkilöt.” In 2021, Juliane’s theater monologue ”Liebe(s) Europa” premiered as part of the program of the German Cultural Center in Tampere. Juliane is also a co-founder of the independent theater group FinNomads, which is dedicated to multilingual theater for children.
