In the Nordic countries, the Venetian Festival is a celebration of water, fire and light—the final glow of summer before darkness arrives. At the same time, it welcomes the coming of autumn.
The centrepiece of the celebration is Romanian composer George Enescu’s iconic String Octet, a masterpiece he composed at the age of just nineteen and one of the most visionary and demanding works ever written for strings. As a prelude, the evening begins at 7 p.m. with contemporary music for solo violin: Linda Suolahti performs Confronting the Sky by American composer Jessica Meyer and Pirin by Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova.
You do not need to know anything about classical music to enter this world. Simply follow the sound, the silence and the changing elements, and let the music carry you from light into darkness, and from the surface of the water into the flames.
