Event Introduction

ANIMA is a performance combining elements of contemporary dance, butoh and performance art. Anima refers to a spirit of the world that flows through all of us. The performance starts with a masked spirit carrying a light in the dark. From there, we follow the spirit’s encounters with its human features and balancing between desires and calmness. ANIMA invites audience and anyone passing by to spend a moment in another world.

In times of heightened individuality, political tensions and identity struggles, is it possible to reach beyond time and space for a more universal approach for a moment? Is this a form of privileged escapism, comfort seeking practice, universal human experience, longing for freedom – or all of them or something else? ANIMA is a dreamlike ritual that translates this exploration into movement.

ANIMA is created by Helsinki-based multidisciplinary artist Rosa Anima, who combines music, dance and visuals elements in her art. She has also designed and made the masks used in the performance. ANIMA is partly based on improvised movement and each performance is adjusted to site-specific needs.
