Celebrate Helsinki’s Night of the Arts with Hungarian craft traditions!
At the workshops, you can try two traditional Hungarian handicraft techniques. Make a figure from corn husks or decorate textiles with potato stamps inspired by Hungarian blue-dyeing (kékfestés) – or try both!
The workshops are suitable for all ages, and no previous experience is needed. All materials are provided, and participation is free of charge. Please note: If you would like to print patterns on your own fabric, you are welcome to bring a piece of fabric with you!
The workshops are open to everyone and free of charge.
No advance registration is required. However, the amount of materials is limited, so please arrive early to secure your place in the workshops.
🌽 Corn husk dolls have been part of Hungarian rural culture for centuries. After the autumn harvest, dried corn husks were used to make toys, decorations and small figures, making use of readily available natural materials.
🎨 Blue-dyeing (kékfestés) is a traditional textile-printing technique in which patterns are applied to fabric before dyeing. This centuries-old craft tradition is an important part of Hungarian folk culture and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.
During the workshops, you can also visit the Liszt Institute’s exhibition Tailored to Life – Hungarian Folk Costumes, which presents Hungary’s colourful and diverse traditional costumes and their history. The exhibition is open from 14 August to 18 September 2026 and is part of the Helsinki Design Week programme.
