Event Introduction
Dance artist Martta Bröyer (1897–1979) was one of the pioneers of modern dance in Finland. In the 1920s and 1930s, she created a unique style that combined dance and poetry reading. This art form, which initially received a mixed reception, is now an inspiration for contemporary artists. Dance teacher Sohvi Niskanen examined Martta Bröyer’s style and the relationship between poetry reading and movement in her thesis, which she used as the basis for creating a poetry-dance work which, like Bröyer’s piece, explores the mystical realms of folk beliefs.
The work will be performed on the Night of the Arts at 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm in the courtyard of the Burgher’s House, Martta Bröyer’s beloved home. The Burgher’s House will be open until 9 pm on the Night of the Arts.
