Event Introduction

Lamenting at the statue of Larin Paraske
“Let Emotions Be Heard”

Welcome to listen and experience the power of contemporary laments at the Helsinki Arts Night. Language used: mainly in Finnish.

The event is organized by Äänellä itkijät association. We will begin the event with a tribute to the Ingrian lamenter Larin Paraske by washing and draping the statue made by sculptor Alpo Sailo with flowers. After this, we will move into a shared lament session, which will begin with Pirkko Fihlman performing a lament for Larin Paraske.

Lamenters, welcome to join us with laments of gratitude or other supportive communal themes in any language. Lamenters, please register in advance: activities@itkuvirsi.net.

The modern Finnish tradition of laments is based on the Karelian and Ingrian tradition of lamenting, but has developed into its own living form of expression in contemporary culture. Lamenting means the expression of emotions aloud using poetic and rhythmic language. Laments can address, for example, sadness, longing, gratitude, love and life changes.

Äänellä itkijät association is a national, non-profit and ideologically unaffiliated association that cherishes, maintains and promotes the Karelian tradition of lamenting. The association also operates as a member association of the Karjalan Liitto.
