Landmarks
Event Introduction
Landmarks is a public celebration by Helsinki’s Punking-Whacking community, centered on collaborative creation, the joy of dance and immersion and drawing inspiration from the environment. Landmarks transforms Helsinki’s well-known statues into living characters and movement and playfully reimagines the traditional imagery of the Punking dance style. At the end of the performance the audience is invited to join in posing, whacking, grooving and partying with the performers.
Punking, created by a group of bipoc gay men in the 70s, turns stigmas into powerful performances and pain into glamour. Whacking is a dance style inspired by one of its elements, focusing on striking arm movements and strong shapes.
Concept and Direction: Ira Wuolle & Kaisa Nieminen
Dancers: Irina, Nadja, Pihla, Mario, Tina, Niina, Lintu, Puu, Jérémy, Lilja, Emppu, Ira, Kaisa
