Event Introduction

Open Studio: Lagos Studio Archives

Lagos Studio Archives would like to invite you to their studio where they will be presenting images from their archive and talking about the motivations behind their ongoing project.

Lagos Studio Archives is an artistic research and cultural preservation project by Helsinki based artists Karl Ohiri and Riikka Kassinen. The archive consists of thousands of film negatives documenting studio portraiture and vernacular photography made in Lagos, Nigeria, from the 1970s to post millenium. The working group’s mission is to collect, preserve and present the rich visual history from Africa’s most populous city giving visibility to practices and at risk archives that have come under threat in recent decades due to a shift from analogue to digital photography and contested city space.

Join us for an evening of discussions, photography, Nigerian music and light refreshments! The project is funded by Kone Foundation.
