Resistance — A Public Art Action in Helsinki Metro Stations

Event Introduction

Resistance is an unfinished painting created in response to a traumatic experience I had at Kompassiaukio, near Rautatientori in Helsinki.

As part of the Freedom Canvas campaign (freedomcanvas_) I will take this unfinished painting into different metro stations across Helsinki and spend approximately 15–20 minutes at each location.

The action will begin at Rautatientori metro station, close to the place where the experience that inspired the painting took place.

At each station, I will simply sit, stand, or briefly whirl with the painting. There is no traditional stage, no fixed audience. The action is intentionally simple and open to interpretation.

Anyone passing through the metro stations will be able to encounter it.

By taking Resistance into public spaces, I want to bring a personal experience into the everyday environment of the city and invite people to pause, observe and think about questions of freedom, expression, public space, power and resistance.

The painting is unfinished because the story is not finished.

The metro journey itself becomes part of the work — moving from one public space to another, carrying the story with me and allowing it to be witnessed by people who happen to pass by.

You can ask me questions about the story behind the painting to encounter the work or simply stop, observe, or continue on your way.

Resistance is not only something I carry in the painting. It is also the act of bringing it back into public space.
