Rastapunka – Final Game
Event Introduction
The Final Game is a happening by artist Rastapunka. It is a card game rooted in historical speculation and a site-specific artwork, in forms of communal solitaire, “Happy Families” style and car-themed card games. The work takes as its starting point the first church and cemetery of the city of Helsinki founded by Gustav Vasa in 1550—sites that now form the Old Town church ruins. Played on-site, the game mirrors the architecture of the original building and plays with historical speculation and the relationship between the present and the past, reflecting on the identities of the approximately 150 individuals buried there. Honoring their legacy, Rastapunka’s work explores what it was like to live in Helsinki during an era that was no longer the Middle Ages yet lacked the conditions to truly embody the Early Modern period.
Rastapunka (b. 1984) is an artist who wanders through cities, working on a project basis—sometimes alone, sometimes collaboratively—often in public spaces and occasionally without anyone’s knowledge. Rastapunka’s work has been exhibited at venues such as the Bear Castle at Korkeasaari Zoo, on the Hudson River in New York, and at the Helsinki Art Museum.
Final Game, organized by Rastapunka, is part of the Munkit ja nunnat (Monks and Nuns) exhibition at the Vallilan Panimo gallery. The exhibition is open at the brewery gallery (Nilsiänkatu 10, 00510 Helsinki) until 9:00 PM on the Night of the Arts, and otherwise until August 28, from Monday to Friday.
