Event Introduction

The concert by the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra and conductor Susanna Mälkki presents three masterpieces that lead the audience through a world of colors, forces of nature, and pure energy.

The evening begins in a fairytale atmosphere with Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose Suite). Ravel’s enchanting richness of color brings the captivating characters of a storybook to life: the music shimmers, inviting the listener into the heart of French impressionist mysticism.

The journey through time and magic continues with Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7. In this architectural masterpiece, Sibelius’s archaic, noble flow carries the listener forward in a single, continuous movement. The music grows organically toward the solemn trombone theme and the orchestra’s powerful, uplifting conclusion.

The concert culminates with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 – the work’s dazzling light and rhythmic joy combined with the explosive energy of the Sibelius Academy’s young virtuosos. From the deep melancholy of the second movement, the music moves into the wild whirlwind of the finale.
