Irish artist Kevin Abosch’s AI-powered film to have its world premiere on the Night of the Arts on 15 August

Night of the Arts, which kicks off Helsinki Festival on 15 August will host the world premiere of acclaimed conceptual and artificial intelligence artist Kevin Abosch’s first film, Am I?. It is also the world’s first synthetic feature film, with every frame created using artificial intelligence.

According to the artist, Am I? is a musical embedded in a documentary wrapped in a sci-fi film. Abosch describes the film as a relentless, fast-paced experience that explores machine consciousness, weaponised AI and transhumanism. “Am I? is a look at how we risk losing our humanity as individuals and collectively as a society while under the influence of machines, from the perspective of a machine”, says Abosch.

The film will be screened on the Night of the Arts at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi in collaboration with Helsinki Festival, Amos Rex and Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy. After the screening, the film will be discussed by Abosch, Marko Ahtisaari, Artistic Director of Helsinki Festival, and Kieran Long, Director of Amos Rex. The film will also be screened as part of the Love & Anarchy Festival programme in September 2024.

Kevin Abosch’s art will be on display in the city throughout Helsinki Festival, when the AI Helsinki exhibition, also using artificial intelligence, opens in Esplanade Park on the Night of the Arts on 15 August. For the exhibition, Abosch, who is also a renowned portrait photographer, took hundreds of thousands of photos of people and landscapes in Helsinki in the spring of 2024, which were then transformed by a guided artificial intelligence. The exhibition is made possible by Helsingin Sanomat.
