Event Introduction

A new Finnish organ work will have its world premiere at the Helsinki Music Centre as the Guards Band, conductor Petri Komulainen, and organist Jan Lehtola perform Helios, a concerto for organ and brass orchestra by Maija Hynninen. The piece explores the interaction between the organ and the brass orchestra – two distinct “orchestras” coexisting. “Like Helios, the sun god of ancient Greece, the organ guides the listener through the piece, shaping its form from great heights,” Maija Hynninen describes her concerto.

Maija Hynninen, who has studied at the Sibelius Academy, IRCAM in Paris, and in the United States, is one of Finland’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary composers. She blends acoustic instruments, human voice, and electronics, breaking the boundaries between different art forms.

The Guards Band, Finland’s oldest continuously active professional orchestra, will once again bring its remarkable brass ensemble sound to the concert. Renowned organist Jan Lehtola, who has premiered over 130 works and was involved in designing the praised organ of the Helsinki Music Centre, now showcases the instrument in new ways through Hynninen’s composition.

The program also features key works of Finnish classical and contemporary music: Aulis Sallinen’s airy and luminous Palace Rhapsody, Magnus Lindberg’s brilliant dialogue between woodwinds and brass in Gran Duo, and Jukka Linkola’s energetic Sisu.

This all-Finnish concert is part of the Juhlat – Säveltäjät 80 vuotta concert series, organized by the Society of Finnish Composers.
