Event Introduction

Latvian violinist and conductor legend Gidon Kremer brings his chamber ensemble Kremerata Baltica to the Helsinki Festival for the first time. The ensemble will perform two concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre, the first of which features pianist, conductor and composer Olli Mustonen as both soloist and composer. The program includes works by Mustonen, Bach, Weinberg, and Mozart.

Founded in 1997, Kremerata Baltica is one of today’s most internationally acclaimed chamber orchestras. Composed of young musicians from the Baltic countries, the ensemble has performed on over 1,000 stages worldwide, earning devoted followers among both contemporary and classical music enthusiasts. The orchestra has recorded numerous modern classics for prestigious labels such as ECM, Nonesuch, Deutsche Grammophon, Hyperion, Sony, Teldec, Alpha-classics and EMI and was awarded a Grammy in 2022. Above all, Kremerata Baltica has introduced Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian culture to the world in an unprecedented way.

In their first concert at the festival, the orchestra will perform piano concertos by J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart, with internationally acclaimed pianist Olli Mustonen as soloist. The program also features the cult composer Mieczysław Weinberg’s Concertino for violin and strings. The concert concludes with Mustonen’s String Quartet No. 1, arranged for string orchestra.
