The Cleveland Orchestra to perform a second concert at Helsinki Festival

The Cleveland Orchestra’s concert, announced for Helsinki Festival in November, was quickly sold out. Due to high demand, the orchestra will perform a second concert at Helsinki Music Centre on 29 August with a programme that includes Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 2 and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

One of the world’s most prestigious symphony orchestras in the world, The Cleveland Orchestra returns to Finland for the first time in nearly 60 years to perform two concerts. The Cleveland Orchestra is regarded as one of the world’s best orchestras, and in 2020, The New York Times named it the best in America. Under Franz Welser-Möst, the orchestra has been honed to its technical and artistic peak.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s first concert at Helsinki Music Centre on Wednesday, 28 August, announced for Helsinki Festival in November, has been sold out. This second concert will take place at Helsinki Music Centre on Thursday, 29 August, with a different programme. The second concert will include Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 2 and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

First performed in Paris in 1925, Prokofiev’s Second Symphony is renowned for its rhythmic power and the influence of the European avant-garde of its time – Prokofiev himself described the work as a vision of “iron and steel”.

Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique has established itself as one of the most important orchestral works of the 19th century. In this work, Berlioz pioneered new orchestral practices and techniques to achieve dreamlike and opium-infused visions previously unheard in Western music.

The Cleveland Orchestra & Franz Welser-Möst in Musiikkitalo on Thu 29 August at 7pm. Tickets €35–€142 / €21–€117 from ticketmaster.fi. Helsinki Festival will take place from 15 August to 1 September 2024.

Helsinki Festival’s main partner is Elisa, the sponsor is Accenture and service partners include Akun tehdas, Grano, Heku, Marski by Scandic and Renault.
